Placed an order with this company for my son's final woodshop project at school. He wanted to order some black walnut to make it special. Company seemed positive. Picked 2 day shipping option, was in a time crunch. Ordered on a Sunday Nov.30 figured be here by Tuesday. No tracking notifications updates in the shop app. Sent another email by following Sunday, no replys, no support. Next Day Monday of the shop app updates & we recieved the order a day later for a total of 10 days. The wood was wrapped in just a layer of clear cellophane wrap & tape. Each corner was damaged from lack of protection. No communication, plus now product damaged! I have tried to call multiple times to initiate a return & they never call you back! Only a voicemail to leave a msg. What a terrible company, hands down shameful. I've never dealt with a company that fails on all fronts in a long time. Just seemingly take your money and run! My worst google review ever for a company! 1 Star for easy ordering! That's about it!
If you are into woodworking, even as a hobbyist, you've got to check this place out! Surprisingly large selection of lumber. Wide range of species. Some gorgeous wood! I took some 5/4 of black walnut to have planed. Was inexpensive. Check their website for more details and services.
This company was unable to successfully ship my order to the United States and still has not provided a full refund. I placed an on October 27, 2025, and was charged $408.60 USD (including an extra $74 for expedited shipping). The shipment was rejected at the border due to their importer-of-record/permit issues, and I never received the lumber. I was only refunded $219.49, with the rest kept as shipping and a “restocking fee,” even though no product was ever delivered and I never returned anything. Their website advertises “100% Satisfaction Guaranteed” and still lets US customers check out without any warning about these known shipping problems. Based on my experience as a US buyer, there is a real risk that your order may never arrive and you may only receive a partial refund.
I Have been going to the knotty lumber for years for odds and ends. Always felt like I was treated well and recieved a fair deal. Today was my first visit to their new location in Hamilton. I felt the customer service was a shadow of what it used to be. They calculated the sq in of the wood in front of me and it showed 27.50, which they decided to round up to $30, while also expecting me to pay cash. Out of spite I would rather pay the 13% gratuity then scratch their back ontop of the $2.50.
I would leave a review about the lumber quality IF I ever receive it, I have made multiple attempts to contact them and I get no response. Customer service is disappointing and slow. There were 2 attempts to get my order, the first one never made it out of Canada and was returned to sender, the second time my order made it to Detroit and sat there for 2 weeks and was returned to sender. I emailed them to just refund my money if it's too difficult to get the order to me. On a $153 order, I was refunded a whopping $47 and charged shipping fee for an order that I never received. Would NOT recommend doing business with them.
I couldn't be happier with my experience at The Knotty Lumber. John was incredibly helpful and patiently walked me through the entire process of designing a custom desk. I ordered a 60x30” Black Walnut top with Z-shaped legs, finished in one coat of Osmo Polyx Satin, and the result is absolutely beautiful. The craftsmanship is top-notch and the price was very fair for a custom piece of this quality. To top it all off, it was completed a week or two earlier than I expected! The location is easy to get to, and I was really impressed by the unfinished pieces they had in the showroom. They'll definitely be seeing me again soon for some wood for my own DIY projects. Highly recommend this place!
John is absolutely wonderful to work with. He has the best quality wood and offers the best prices around! John is friendly, approachable and professional. We asked John to cut 125 dark walnut 18"x10" boards for us and have it ready for us the following morning. Well, he did exactly that! His turn around time was absolutely amazing.
